Kites!

No No Mr. Hrithik Roshan, don’t get so excited thinking about the fact that I’m gonna write about your fiasco movie here…you should be obliged …at least I’ve used your picture’s name as a title of this post!

Going forward with the topic…talking about kites (पतंग), and kite flying (पतंग बाज़ी).

Right from my childhood days...we used to wait for Independence day, the 15th day of August every year…not because we were interested in what our honorable prime minister has to say on this day but for the fascinating tradition of flying kites.

There was a time, when kite flying was taken in a very serious fashion. We used to bet on whoz gonna win the game …stand for hours on the terrace with lost appetite. The sky was dotted with hundreds of colorful kites and people were engaged in kite-flying competitions. Children and adults alike try to cut the others' kite threads and make other's kites fall to the ground while their own stays in the air.

We used to prepare ourselves to hear loud voices filled with zeal and excitement - shouting “ oye dheel de, dheel de” ["loosen it up"] and ‘wo kaatta’ (cut that kite) in an extravagant atmosphere of the Independence day.

Things have changed tremendously these days as that feel, that excitement, that bonding has almost eclipsed.

It is difficult to exactly point out the nailed down reasoning of declining ecstasy and fanaticism for flying kites. Umm...changing lifestyle, technology and least initiative by parents to educate children about kite-flying as a tradition may be a reason.

Wish I could turn back time and revive those fond memories!
